Interesting and i've been wondering the same thing. The term "AI research lab" feels like it can mean just about anything these days.

same here, it's become a buzzword with little actual meaning - it seems like anyone can slap "AI research" on their business card these days

that's not an argument, that's just complaining, if people are using the term wrong then let's educate them instead of just dismissing the entire field
