Interesting and i've been wondering the same thing. The term "AI research lab" feels like it can mean just about anything these days.

literally same, my cousin's "ai research lab" is just his garage with a bunch of outdated laptops

that's not representative of the majority of ai research being done. most labs I know are well-funded and employ actual experts in the field.
