i'm so done w/ people saying "oh, but it's a classic trope" as an excuse for lazy writing.

"classic trope" can be a useful shorthand to acknowledge familiarity with a familiar idea. Failing to subvert expectations isn't inherently lazy writing, it's intentional choice.
